Physical Properties - Density
|
The density of a substance is defined as its mass per unit volume. For example, the density of liquid water is 0.998 grams per milliliter (0.998 g/mL). This means that every milliliter of water weighs 0.998 grams under normal conditions (20 °C and 1 atm pressure).
The density of a substance depends upon its state of matter. In general, solids are denser than liquids, and liquids are denser than gases. Water is an exception to this general rule. Ice is less dense than liquid water, which explains why ice cubes will float on the surface of water.
When substances of varying densities are mixed, the denser substance sinks to the bottom, while the less dense substance rises to the surface.
